Osaka Expo: It Takes a Village!

At Expo, the pavilions are staffed with wonderful and helpful people—natives of the countries as well as Japanese staff members working alongside them. They help make visits to pavilions even more enjoyable with their cheerfulness and knowledge. They do get to interact with visitors and receive well-deserved appreciation every day.

The people whom I would like to acknowledge and show appreciation for are the army of ground staff, volunteers, and all who support our experience of visiting the Osaka Expo. I have been 22 times as of writing this (sorry it has taken this long to write this), and these people are a major part of what makes the expo-going experience wonderful for me and others.

I will begin with the people I encounter from the time I leave my house to go to the Expo site.

-       Train-related personnel: Thank you to the train station workers and attendants—guiding us safely through stations, onto platforms, onto the correct trains, managing crowds, and ensuring we arrive and return in an orderly and safe way.

-       ALL Volunteers: Whether on the Expo grounds, in the train stations, or across Osaka—thank you for your time, generosity, and willingness to help strangers, whom you treat with care and kindness, as if we were treasured friends. From offering directions to helping with photos, you do so much.

-       Entrance gate personnel (East and West Gates, and any other entrances I may not know about): Waiting in line to enter Expo can be a long process, but you assist us with patience, efficiency, cheerful words, and smiles. (Sorry, I always carry so many water bottles!)

-       Security personnel: Thank you for keeping us moving, on track to where we are going, out of the way of vehicles, and out of where we should not be ( Sorry, I always want to see everything!)

-       Janitorial/bathroom cleaning staff: Thank you for keeping everything clean and pristine. You somehow manage to keep bathrooms used by hundreds of thousands of people CLEAN ALL THE TIME (capitals very much intentional)! If you only knew how incredible this achievement is, you would never think "you are only doing a small thing."

-       Sanitation personnel: again, Clean and Pristine! Helping us keep to proper disposal procedures and managing the waste generated by so many people, as if by magic.

-       Landscaping/Gardening personnel: beautifying the space with greenery, flowers, and plants so that we are touched and comforted by nature as much as possible amid the architectural and technological wonders.

To all of you—and any group I missed—you are an essential part of what makes the Expo great! Thank you!!!
